January 2014 in Albuquerque, New Mexico

JANUARY 1st, 2014

We're far away from home, but the sky is still beautiful wherever we go.

Albuquerque has a variety of homes.  Many of the people live in trailer parks like this one.

We went to dinner for New Year on January 1st to avoid the crowds who were out celebrating.  Here we are, Elder and Sister Ellis, with Sister Marilyn Yerkes.  She and her husband are over the apartments, and work in the office.  He loves having Elder Ellis around to help him pick up or deliver furniture, or take anything to Good Will that needs to be gone.

Elder Neal Yerkes, Sister Barbara McBride (her husband, Jeff, is sick), and Sister Linda Dennis.  Elder McBride is a counselor for the missionaries, and Sister Dennis is President Miller's secretary.

OUR FIRST MLC LUNCH - THURSDAY, JANUARY 2, 2014
MLC is training for the Zone Leaders and Sister Trainers.  It was held in the Mission Home.
These are some of the wonderful elders and sisters who came.  The one closest to the camera is Elder Turnbow, one of the AP's.
These are the beautiful sisters, eating in the dining room.
Here are more of the wonderful elders.
And more!
Still more!  The elder with the surprised look on his face is Elder Vial, who is also an AP.  The elder closest to the camera is Elder Magalei.  He is a happy boy, and makes everyone else happy.  He also has a beautiful voice, and sings often, regardless of where he is.
We forgot to take pictures while we were in the kitchen, but Elder Ellis did a great job of helping to clean it up. We served potato bar with chili and lots of toppings, green salad and baked beans, with brownies and ice cream for dessert.  They all loved the menu, and we were very glad!  It's nice to have your first one be a success.  We will do this the first Thursday of every month, and we are so happy to be asked to do this.
After lunch, we all went in the backyard for a group picture.  President Steve Miller is getting everyone in place.
All of the missionaries love President Miller because he is such a kind man, and they know how much he loves them.
Beautiful members of God's Army!!

DISTRICT MEETING - FRIDAY, JANUARY 3, 2014
These have got to be some of the best zone leaders in the world.  Elders Jenson and Weber (like Webber) with the chart they use for each zone to report how they're doing.
Elder Jenson with a cookie sheet and paper cups supporting him to represent how important ward members are to the missionaries.

Elder Weber didn't think about how important balance is for support!

The Albuquerque Temple - Saturday, January 4

Sunday, January 5 - Almost every Sunday night, we get together with the other senior missionaries for dinner.  Sister Linda Dennis, Sister Barbara and Elder Jeff McBride, and Elder Wayne and Sister Geri Cottle.  Elder Cottle is over the cars, and she pays the bills.  Elder Cottle is glad to have Elder Ellis here to help with the cars in many ways.

OUR FIRST LUNCH FOR NEW MISSIONARIES - Monday, January 6
Monday, January 6 - For all the pictures I take, you'd think I could remember to take some of our first lunch for the new missionaries.  But, no.  This is the only one.  We had eight new ones come - two of them sisters.  We fed them turkey, ham, and cheese hoagies with potato salad, green salad, olives (which they all were excited about - including President Miller!), chips, and white cake with cherry/pineapple topping and ice cream.  They were so appreciative of what we fixed, and it went very smooth.  Some of the seniors commented on how we served the meats and cheese - the meat folded and put on plates, and the cheese cut into triangles.  We were happy that we'd gone to the trouble to serve it in an appealing way, even though we just thought that's how it should be done.  We will do this every six weeks when the new missionaries arrive.  Tomorrow will be transfer day.  We're anxious to be part of that.
Is this a picture-perfect sky, or what?  I don't know why there were so many jet trails, but it was too beautiful to miss catching it.  I'm so glad I did!
These are typical of some neighborhoods.  Did you notice the yards?  Most don't have any grass - rocks and gravel, and a few bushes.  There's not much water here, so landscaping is done with that in mind.  We miss the trees and grass back home - especially the beautiful trees.

January 10 - Every Friday we have District meeting from 10:30 to 12:00.
These are our District leaders - Elders Beck and Sircable.  They do a great job with their responsibilities.  Elder Beck has THE BEST laugh!  He makes everyone laugh when they hear him, and he is just happy.  Elder Sircable is waiting for his visa to go to Brazil, speaking Portuguese.  He's been here for a few months, and we're all kind of hoping his visa never comes.  He also loves it here.  We just love both of them, and feel blessed to be able to serve with them.
Sisters Hellickson, England, McShane, and Murphy.
Getting used to all of the things expected of us, and loving every minute of it!
We went visiting later in the day and ran into Elders Jenson and Weber out doing the same thing.  They're kind of the short and tall of it, and a great companionship.

Elder Weber's Birthday Dinner - January 11
Getting things ready in our cute little kitchen.  The washer and dryer face each other on the other side of the door by me.  Very handy, and they're both good machines - definitely another blessing to us.
Sisters Murphy and McShane (they call themselves McSmurph) and Jenson and Weber, working on the puzzle Ray got for Christmas from family.  He left the worst part for last, and is glad for the help.
This was a fun birthday dinner to make.  I told Elder Weber he had to choose the menu, and he said he loves breakfast, so we had waffles, bacon and sausage, and scrambled eggs.  And chocolate milk, of course.  It was just what he wanted.

Dishing up the cheesecake he chose for dessert.  It was a fun evening, and we love having them over.

Monday, January 13 - We were so happy to get a call from Dan and Jan Christensen, from Layton, telling us they would be in town and would we meet them for dinner.  Dan and Ray played in Kent McMillan's dance band for over thirty years.  Dan played the piano, with no music.  He is a very talented, busy man.  This was the first time we'd been in Albuquerque city center, and we were amazed at the big, tall buildings.  The roads in town are two-lane roads, so there's no sunshine in between the buildings.  Albuquerque is so much bigger and more modern than we had expected, but it does depend on where you are.
This is in front of the Hyatt-Regency, where we met them.  Isn't Elder Ellis handsome?
Wednesday, January 15 - Sister Murphy and McShane asked us to help them give a Bible story at the Beehive House,  an assisted living home.  We will do this every Wednesday.  None of them are members of the church, so they don't know any of the songs we sing.  Our stories have to be nondenominational,  so they're always from the Bible.  We enjoyed our first experience there.

A LITTLE ABOUT WHAT WE DO

Hi!  Well, tomorrow we'll have been here one month and one week.  It seems a lot longer than that, but that's not counting the week at the MTC.  Even though we aren't proselyting missionaries, or office people, we keep pretty busy trying to do what the Bishop, ward mission leaders, Elders, Sisters, and sometimes the office people need us to do.  The RS president gave us a list of sisters who need to be visited - mostly elderly.  We have visited with a lot of them since last Friday, and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them.  We visited a lady yesterday who will be 100 in June.  She said her people just keep living; they don't die.  Her sister just passed away at the age of 105.  We hope to help celebrate her 100th birthday.  She doesn't socialize; just stays home.  She's more like 80 or 90, than her age, but she's lost most of her hearing, so doesn't go out much.  She was a delight to get to know, as are the others we visited with.  We have meetings every Friday morning with the zone leaders, Elders and Sisters, and sometimes (like tomorrow) take part in teaching part of the training.  We've had to teach in the gospel essentials once.  We have meetings almost every Sunday - 8:00 or 11:30, then church at 1:00 (our most favorite time - NOT).  We get together with the other senior missionaries almost every Sunday evening and do dinner.  On the first Thursday of the month, we fix lunch for 40 missionaries who come for mission leadership meeting.  We've only done it once, and we fed them potato bar, salad, fruit, hot rolls, brownies.  They loved the meal, and raved about it, so it was a success.  A week ago, and every six weeks, we feed lunch to the new missionaries, zone leaders, and sister trainers.  There were only eight new missionaries, but next time there are about 20 coming.  We also help the next morning for breakfast at the transfer meeting.  It was wonderful, and a learning experience, for us to see what happens when the Elders/Sisters get transferred or are going home.  Emotional, tears.  Anyway - there is always something for us to do, and we're ready for bed at night.  We love the other senior missionaries.  We all get along really well, and that makes it all good.  We've had little miracles, meeting people we feel that God has put in our path for us to talk to.  We are praying that they will call the number on the 'pass-out' card (as Ray calls it), and have the missionaries come teach them.  It's hard to fit time in for letters and emails.  Always something to do.  Today I ironed four of Ray's shirts, but there are more to do.  That will give him enough to last for a bit.
This is our sweet friend who will be 100 in June.

On Our Way to Albuquerque, New Mexico!

MONDAY, DECEMBER 9TH, 2013
Saying goodbye to our little Buddies who were at our home the morning we left.
This is Owen, who just turned 4.  I will miss him saying, "Love you too!".
Drew and I will miss going to the carwash together.
Colby and Rockwell.  There's just nothing quite like these baby boys!
We're ready to leave.  Toby had to say goodbye.  We're so excited to be missionaries, but there will be some hard times being without our family.
One last stop at Ray's Auto Body to tell Jackie and Gary goodbye.
We stayed in Moab Monday night.  Always have to have some goodies, right?
Some of the sights along the way to Albuquerque.
Love the sky God creates to give us breathtaking beauty and happiness.
Tuesday, December 10th - Our welcoming committee - Sister Dennis, Sister and Elder Cottle on left, and Sister and Elder Yerkes took us to our apartment.  It was SO nice to have new friends here to meet us.
They took us to Chick-fil-A to eat.
This is our apartment - our home away from home - and it's really nice.
Elder Ellis thinks it's great, too!  The stairs will do us good!
Wednesday, December  11th - President and Sister Miller took us out to dinner.  We love them already!
Turning our little apartment into 'Home'.
Saturday December 14th - We were so excited to have Zone Conference right after we arrived.  Elder Ellis went early and helped Elder Cottle with vehicle inspection.  The Albuquerque mission has the largest fleet in the Church - over 100.  Sister Yerkes, and Sister and Elder McBride, also Senior missionaries.
Elder Foster of the Seventies was the visiting authority.  There were a lot of missionaries here, and the Elders were very polite to wait for the Sisters to dish up their plates first.  The meeting and the meal were wonderful!  Our first Zone Conference and we loved it!
Out to dinner at Sadie's, a Mexican restaurant, with our new friends.  The Lord blessed us to be able to serve with these wonderful people, and they all feel the same.  Imagine - a Mexican restaurant!
Our ward is Academy Heights.  It's about 10-15 minutes south and west from our apartment, and covers areas north and east of us.  The ward boundaries are very big.
Our first Sunday in Albuquerque.  Our ward looks just the same as it would anywhere.
Elder Ellis at the Mission Office.
We were happy to feed the missionaries.  Elders Jenson and Weber on the left; Sister Murphy (back) and McShane on the right.  This is just one of the many things we love about our mission.
Elders Weber, Ellis, and Jenson
Sisters Murphy, Ellis, and McShane.
After District meeting - Sisters McShane, Murphy, Ellis, England, and Hellickson.
In the Mission Office.
Saturday, December 21st - They took me shopping at Christopher and Banks.  I don't think I'll ever learn how to find anything around here.  I just won't drive!
A family we visited with the Sister missionaries.
This man was our first miracle story.  We met him in a store two days after we got here.  They are having the Elders teach them the Gospel.  We hope they understand, and love it as much as we do.
This amusement park is right across the street from our apartment complex.  Can you believe they would be riding the roller coaster in December?  They are!
We love President Steve Miller.  He is such a kind, warm, loving man.  Another blessing of our call.
Trying to put some Christmas spirit in our little apartment, and make it seem like home.  We got our tree two days before Christmas for 70% off at Hobby Lobby.  Yup - there's one of those here!
December 24th - Christmas Eve.
This incredible home belongs to two older sisters.  They designed it, and had it built years ago.
This miniature village is an actual replica of places the sisters have known in their lives, a lot of them belonging to family.
The detail is incredible, to scale, and amazing!
The Nativities on the table and the decorations all have stories, and most belong to their family.  They have two kilns, and have made many things in their home..
This unique wall is in the hallway.  They had it built this way so they could put these figures in the cubbies.
Here are the two wonderful sisters with one of their two very loved dogs.  We were invited to their home for incredible lasagna, asparagus, and other delicious food.  They're such loved ladies.
We drove around in three cars so the sisters could show us what Albuquerque looks like at Christmas time.  There were several of these balloons on the golf course.  They would light up, then go off, over and over again.  What a sight!
This is just one of the many places we drove to see the Luminaries in people's yards.  Beautiful!
Christmas Day - The Elders came over to Skype with their families.  They were so excited to be able to have some time to talk to them, and see them.  It was fun to see them so happy.
Elders Weber, showing his family the new shoes they sent him.
Elder Jenson, showing his family the hat that plays music and jiggles.
Christmas dinner together.  If we can't be with family, it's good to be with people we have become such close friends with to celebrate Christmas together.
Our little tree with a few decorations, and 'pass-out' cards (as Elder Ellis calls them) to use to represent the true meaning of Christmas.
Natalie sent the little tree and packages to us that we had sent to her when she was a nanny in New Jersey.  It meant a lot to us.  We bought the cute little Nativity to help us celebrate His birth.
These are Christmas letters and gifts from Madi's Beehive class in Taylor 1st Ward back home.  It all meant so much to us, and their thoughtfulness was very much appreciated.
These are all handmade, and so incredible!  A fascinating place to visit, and not too far from us.
You wouldn't know it was December, would you?  No snow!
The stagecoach in the background is life-size, and has people in it.

DISTRICT MEETING
December 27th - Elders Beck and Sircable, trying to feed each other popcorn without bending their arms.  To represent the need to take care of others, not ourselves, and that we need each other.  They are THE BEST Elders!  And Elder Beck has a laugh that makes everyone laugh.  We love these young missionaries!

December 29th, 2013
Here are my friends, in our cute kitchen - Marilyn Yerkes, Barbara McBride, me, Geri Cottle, and Linda Dennis.  Fun, happy women who love the Lord and love being missionaries.  They all work in the office.
They all came to our apartment for Sunday dinner after Christmas.
The beautiful Nativity on the lawn of the Albuquerque Temple.  Missing snow!
This is our new temple, and we love it.
